Aufgang - Aufgang

Aufgang will release their debut album via Agoria's Infiné imprint early next year.

Comprised of Juilliard-trained pianists Francesco Tristano and Rami Khalifé as well as drummer Aymeric Westrich, the trio explores the line between avant-garde modern classical and four-to-the-floor drumming. The conception of the group stems back to 2005, when both Jeff Mills and a booker for Sonar festival were present at one of Francesco's performances at an art gallery in Barcelona. After playing his normal set, Rami joined him to run through an adapted version of "The Bells," with Mills quickly putting a swift word in to get them booked immediately.

"It's neither acoustic techno nor electronically seasoned classical music, like Wendy Carlos," explains Tristano, who has previously collaborated with the likes of Carl Craig and Christian Prommer. The record spans from acid-influenced pieces ("Ausgang") through to the dissonant flurry of "Channel 8," and although it may work better as a home listen, there are also a few club-friendly tracks that could potentially do some damage on more open-minded dance floors.

The latest release from Kieran Hebden arrives in a growingly familiar and mysterious context. With no information, sales note or sleeve artwork and released on a limited print 12", we expect this to fly off of our shelves. The lead-track "Love-Cry" is evident of Kieran Hebden's recent exploration into hypnotic , Kraut infused 4/4 techno... a chopped female vocal sample dances ecstatically in the rhythm machine to great effect. On the flip "Our Bells" he takes us through a mini symphony of chiming, oriental bells- beatless and delicious.

We are currently taking pre-orders for this limited single release to ship for the week starting 2nd November. Judging by how quickly his last mysterious 12" with Burial flew out when we announced that, we would recommend buying this... quickly... very quickly.

This Friday we’ll once again be opening our double doors and welcoming all things Funky down into Room Two of FABRICLIVE. Headed up by UK Funky Godfather, Donaeo, complete with his full live band, the line up also includes Toddla T, Rinse.fm’s Geeneus and BBC 1Xtra’s Mistajam alongside Lil Silva, and the big man, owner and proprietor of the Roska Kicks & Snares label himself, Roska. In the run up to his performance we shot him 5 quick fire questions and in return he offered us a stacked free download of his ‘Hey Cutie’ track.

Roska - Hey Cutie download

This Friday marks your debut at FABRICLIVE. What can we expect from your good self?
To be honest I can’t wait to get on the decks at fabric! I'll be dropping some heavy b-line funky.

It’s pretty much a funky extravaganza in room two on Friday
Yeah… If you’re a lover of funky get down there. Everyone’s going to have their own styles and tracks. you got Geeneus who has a wide range of styles, also Lil Silva who has loads too so were going to have those riddims that no one else will have.

What have you got coming up at the moment?
Look out for my album coming out in the New Year, plus I have a remix EP with the likes of Zed Bias and Malice remixes. I also have a load of remixes coming out shortly.

How much of a straight up House fan are you?
I love house! That’s where I kinda came from alongside garage and broken [beat]. I love the sounds of Dennis Ferrer and Claude Von Stroke.

Any final shouts and words?
Make sure you get yourself down to fabric on Friday and big up the Rinse Family, Cooly G and Scratcha!

FACT mix 95: Will Saul

This Monday's exclusive mix comes from the man behind Simple and Aus Records, Will Saul.

For a while now, Simple has been one of the leading lights of the more melodic side of house music favoured by Dial, Kompakt when they fancy being good, et al, releasing music from the label's core artists (Saul, Sideshow) as well as the likes of Vector Lovers and Motorcitysoul.

In 2006, Saul also formed Aus Music with Sideshow/Fink, to focus on the more experimental side of dub and techno: the brilliant Lee Jones has been a regular contributor to the label, which this year has turned its attention to the more elegiac side of dubstep: commissioning releases from Martyn, Pearson Sound, and - coming next year - a new EP from man of the moment Joy Orbison.

Two Orbison tracks from said EP feature on Will's FACT mix along with unreleased material from Lee Jones and Ramadanman, and tracks from Shed, Mount Kimbie, Future Sound of London, Omar-S, Lusine, Burial and more. For more Will Saul in the mix, we'd recommend his three-disc contribution to EQ Recordings' Balance series, which is out now.

FACT mix 93: Jam City

OK, so he isn't quite the messiah - though it's true that certain members of the FACT team believe he is - but his initials are JC. One way or the other other, it's fair to say that Jam City is a new producer we're incredibly pleased to have discovered.

Having downloaded and caned the mix he recorded recently for Lower End Spasm, we had to ask for him a FACT Mix, and sharpish. The young South Londoner has really excelled himself with a ravishing, uniquely psychedelic take on grime-inspired house and funky that confidently avoids any obvious or over-familiar tunes. Look out for three original, ultra-percussive Jam City productions - 'What I Think About You', 'Runnin Yr Mouth' and 'Underpass Limiter', plus four exclusive edits and the absolutely beast Reese-bass-fuelled 'Shining' by Gremino, and further contributions from the likes of Bookworms and DJ Gukwa.

We're not sure there's any producer or DJ in the UK right now who is so skilfully balancing dancefloor ruffage and emotional delicacy. Make no mistake, Jam City has a blindingly bright future ahead of him; download this mix and hear exactly why.

Quantic - Calypos, Cumbias & Compas

A musical mix for October.

So, in the constant organisation of the amounting chaos at the side of my record player, this mix was born. Some what of a ‘new arrivals’ mix, here is the best of music found recently from Trinidad, Haiti, Colombia & Africa. I’m particularly warming to calypso of late & Charanga too, from Colombia’s north coast. And it’s off to Cartagena in the north this weekend to experience nearby Palenque’s festival of Tambores, from what friends tell me, it really is a unique festival, quite looking forward to it. In the meantime, enjoy this mix of new music (some of it over 50 years old!).

When it comes to dubstep and the outer fringes of UK garage, few names ring out quite like Kode9. Next week, the Hyperdub label head will release 5, a two-disc compilation that both looks back at the influential label's history and lays the groundwork for its future. To help commemorate the release, we asked Kode9 to submit something for the XLR8R podcast. Apparently, 5 has put the man in a historical mood, as he delivered this Bubble 'N' Squeak Mix, comprised entirely of classic UK garage and 2-step from 1999-2002. Originally aired as part of the special 25th-Anniversary broadcast of Radio Lancashire's On the Wire, XLR8R and Hyperdub are now making it available as a proper download.

When mysterious dubstep genius Burial and beat-wrecker Flying Lotus collaborate on a track, it's a big deal. Or it's a big deal to everyone except Flying Lotus and Burial, it seems.

Earlier this year, FlyLo posted the mysterious track on his MySpace page, then removed it. Thankfully, it is on YouTube, and you can hear it below,. It's a particularly murky bit of downbeat electronic heaviness with, of all things, a bit of V.I.C.'s dance-rap goof "Get Silly" thrown in at the end.
It has been confirmed that this untitled track is indeed a collaboration between the two downbeat sound scientists. Unfortunately, there are no plans to release the song or for the two to work together again.(pitchfork)

Burial & Flying Lotus collaboration.

In the past nine years Montreal-hailing Mike Shannon has gone from being hotly-tipped to being world-renowned, rapidly establishing himself as one of the most reliable and dancefloor-curdling techno DJ/producers in the galaxy.

His career began at the front-end of this century with the release of 'Sunaj Assassins' on his own Cynosure imprint. Cynosure is a by-word for quality experimental techno, releasing records by Shannon himself as well as the likes of Deadbeat, Mark Henning and Brett Johnson. Shannon has gone on to record for a number of other celebrated labels including Wagon Repair and Dumb-Unit. In 2002 he released his debut album on the legendary Force Inc; it was followed in 2006 by Possible Conclusions To Stories That Never End for Scape, and most recently came the excellent Memory Tree, recorded for Hawtin's Plus8.

With a glitchy, swinging sound that proves there's still plenty of life in minimal techno if it's done right, Shannon is always an enthralling listening. His mix for FACT is essentially a "best of Cynosure", featuring seven Shannon productions alongside tracks from Monoblock, SLG, Sieg Uber Die Sonner and more. It's pretty fucking good.

Dubstep lovers rejoice: Hot on the heels of Soul Jazz's Steppas Delight 2 comes the seventh instalment of Tempa's long-running Dubstep Allstars series, a "double disc expedition which unearths newfound pleasures aplenty" thanks to Ramadanman and Chef, two of the scene's most esteemed luminaries.

Coming at a time when the genre paints an increasingly splintered picture, it's a combination of two divergent schools: disc one, mixed by sub-bass veteran Chef, goes heavy on the main room vibes with a spate of fresh tracks from half-step big guns Skream, Benga and Silkie alongside deeper cuts from Mala, Cyrus and Conquest, while Hessle Audio's Ramadanman plunges headlong into the world of techno-flavoured 2-step on disc two with crossover workouts from Martyn, Scuba and Peverelist, and more than a bit of Hessle activity courtesy of nu-school wonderkids Pangaea, Untold, Joe and Ramadanman himself. As with previous instalments, expect the bleeding edge of dubstep.

(RA)

Peverelist is set to drop his debut full-length next month.

With his position as manager of Bristol's premier new vinyl stockist, Rooted Records, Tom Ford has found himself at the centre of the city's burgeoning dubstep scene, with his Punch Drunk imprint now established as one of the go-to labels for listeners and DJs looking for a forward-thinking take on UK bass music. His own productions have been one of the primary reasons why Punch Drunk has become so lauded, forging influences from jungle, techno and dub to create a sound that is very much his own.

Only two of his previously released creations find their way onto Jarvik Mindstate, which takes its title from Michigan-born scientist Robert Jarvik, who was the main pioneer behind the first ever artificial heart. "The tracks are a snapshot in time of some of my work," Ford explains in a recent interview with Martin "Blackdown" Clark for Pitchfork. "I wanted to put out a body of work, something more substantial than a 12-inch. The thread that joins the tracks together is that they were all made within that time frame, where I had certain ideas running 'round my head which should tie the tracks together. Many of the tracks are loosely inspired by ideas about the integration of technology and human life. The mechanical heart valve seemed a good manifestation of those ideas, Jarvik was the guy who invented it."

The remaining seven tracks that are exclusive to the album see the producer explore the winding rhythmic arcs that he has made his trademark, with plenty of steppy idiosyncratic arpeggios scattered throughout. While the euphorically futurist stylings of "Not Yet Further Than" may appeal to the straighter techno DJs out there, "Yesterday I Saw The Future" sees his junglist tendencies materialise more than ever before, while lurching half-speed dub is the order of the day on "Revival," a collaboration with his good friend and housemate Pinch. Vinyl buyers will be treated to a heavyweight triple LP featuring one track spread out over each side, while CD buyers will get the added bonus of jaunty hi-hat roller "Valves" as well as previously released Peverelist anthems "Infinity Is Now" and "Clunk Click Every Trip."

MODESELEKTOR - ART&CASH OFFICIAL VIDEO

RA.176 Arto Mwambe

The Brontosaurus boys show us what they're all about on this week's RA podcast.

Who or what is Arto Mwambé? Until recently we were led to believe that he's a talented young producer from Burkina Faso. But it recently came out that the men responsible for the project are actually Christian Beißwenger (AKA CB Funk) and Brontosaurus boss Phillip Lauer. The two Frankfurt natives have been active in the city's electronic music scene since the turn of the decade, with Lauer making his mark with a run of choice deep house 12-inches on local label Séparé Recordings, and Beißwenger dabbling in the funkier end of microhouse and minimal techno. Soon after teaming up for a 12-inch of twisted electronic disco on Punkt, Lauer launched his Brontosaurus imprint and took Beißwenger under his wing.

It proved to be a good choice: The sublime rolling house of the Mudhutma! EP became quite the sleeper hit throughout 2007, and follow-up singles successfully straddled the line between quirky electro-disco and squelchy house. They've also started a new studio project alongside Daniel Nentwig and Thomas Sabrowsky of Extra Produktionen which also goes under the Brontosaurus tag, and this week's RA podcast will serve as an introduction to their little musical family. ...more at ra

Roger Robinson and The Bug will release their debut King Midas Sound album next month.

Robinson has previously worked with musicians, albeit in a strictly spoken role, but this collaboration with Kevin is the first time that he has tested out his tense falsetto vocal. Using Martin's claustrophobic electronic dub tracks as his backing, Robinson ruminates on themes of love, loss and life, flitting between intense vocal performances such as "Earth A Kill Ya" and other more soulful cuts. Title track "Waiting For You" is one of these tracks, taking the lovers rock style and stripping it to its bare bones, and there's plenty to appeal to more open-minded reggae aficionados throughout the record. "Meltdown" (from the recent 5 Years Of Hyperdub CD) and album opener "Cool Out" are the only tracks to have been previously released, so Hyperdub fans should look forward to eleven fresh takes on the King Midas Sound template once it hits shops in November.

Tracklist
01. Cool Out
02. Waiting For You
03. One Thing
04. Earth a Kill Ya

06. Meltdown
07. I Man

FACT mix 91: Starkey

Our latest FACT podcast comes from Philadelphia's king of Street Bass, Starkey.

More influenced by grime than its more popular cousin, dubstep, Starkey's made a name for himself with some of this decade's most dynamic, overblown dance music: bass-heavy club tracks that are rhythmically all over the place, constantly changing direction, with dramatic key changes and leadlines that sear higher than the stars before imploding like dying stars.

Starkey has one of the biggest sounds around - and not in a cheap, tearout dubstep sense - his tracks carry tons of physical and emotional weight; tracks like 'Miracles' and 'Crippling' some of the most beautiful tracks produced by this anything goes, post-garage music. For a full interview with him, check the second page of this article.

Youthful French producer and ZZK compatriot Douster has certainly made a splash in 2009 with his clubby European take on the various tropical rhythms (and riddims) emerging from around the globe. Whether it be dancehall or kuduro, cumbia or UK funky, Douster can be counted on to deliver an uptempo, chopped-and-sliced dancefloor filler. His seemingly endless series of remixes (both official and unofficial) have certainly grabbed our attention, which is why we named him an Artist to Watch a few weeks back. Now, as he prepares to unleash his ZZK debut, Triassic Genesis, Douster has laced us with a hyperactive tropical mix that is absolutely bursting with unreleased tracks and exclusive remixes.

Triassic Genesis will be available digitally worldwide on October 20 via ZZK Records.

FACT mix 90: dÉbruit

This Friday's exclusive podcast comes from Parisian synth-funk futurist dÉbruit.

A member of the Musique Large stable with Fulgeance and more, dÉbruit's brand of hip-hop - finding its space somewhere between Legowelt's eccentric synth experiments and Rustie's bottom-heavy crunk - is doing it for us big time right now, and his recent single, 'Let's Post-Funk' is one of the very best 12"s to come from this whole 'beat scene' that's cropped up again in the last couple of years.

The Frenchman's FACT mix features contributions from touchstones of this sound like Madlib and Dorian Concept, alongside less obvious bits from Kurtis Blow, Konono n°1 and Mweslee, not to mention plenty of dÉbruit's own material - released and unreleased.

Oh, and if you fancy a visual treat, make sure you peep his latest video, which is designed to be watched with 3D glasses. Watch out for a full interview with FACT in the near future.
