Peverelist - Jarvik Mindstate

Peverelist is set to drop his debut full-length next month.

With his position as manager of Bristol's premier new vinyl stockist, Rooted Records, Tom Ford has found himself at the centre of the city's burgeoning dubstep scene, with his Punch Drunk imprint now established as one of the go-to labels for listeners and DJs looking for a forward-thinking take on UK bass music. His own productions have been one of the primary reasons why Punch Drunk has become so lauded, forging influences from jungle, techno and dub to create a sound that is very much his own.

Only two of his previously released creations find their way onto Jarvik Mindstate, which takes its title from Michigan-born scientist Robert Jarvik, who was the main pioneer behind the first ever artificial heart. "The tracks are a snapshot in time of some of my work," Ford explains in a recent interview with Martin "Blackdown" Clark for Pitchfork. "I wanted to put out a body of work, something more substantial than a 12-inch. The thread that joins the tracks together is that they were all made within that time frame, where I had certain ideas running 'round my head which should tie the tracks together. Many of the tracks are loosely inspired by ideas about the integration of technology and human life. The mechanical heart valve seemed a good manifestation of those ideas, Jarvik was the guy who invented it."

The remaining seven tracks that are exclusive to the album see the producer explore the winding rhythmic arcs that he has made his trademark, with plenty of steppy idiosyncratic arpeggios scattered throughout. While the euphorically futurist stylings of "Not Yet Further Than" may appeal to the straighter techno DJs out there, "Yesterday I Saw The Future" sees his junglist tendencies materialise more than ever before, while lurching half-speed dub is the order of the day on "Revival," a collaboration with his good friend and housemate Pinch. Vinyl buyers will be treated to a heavyweight triple LP featuring one track spread out over each side, while CD buyers will get the added bonus of jaunty hi-hat roller "Valves" as well as previously released Peverelist anthems "Infinity Is Now" and "Clunk Click Every Trip."
